Lady of Legend to star in 50th Anniversary Gala

20th February, 2024 by East Somerset Railway in The Railway

lady of legend

The Saint class locomotives were introduced by the Great Western Railway (GWR) from 1902. They were a common site for almost half a century before they were all scrapped by 1953.

Completed in 2019, the Saint is a faithful recreation of Great Western Edwardian elegance with the first member of the class introduced in 1902. This £825,000 project was funded entirely by donations and bequests. The engineering excellence of the creation of 2999 was recognised by the Heirtage Railway Association in February 2020 when the project won the first ever Chairman's special prize at the organisation's anual awards. The project was also 'Highly Commended' at the national Museums + Heritage awards in September 2020.

2999 is set to be the first of its class to ever traverse the ESR and will appear alongside home-fleet locos GWR Large Prairie 4110, LMS Ivatt 2MT 46447 and Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST 1719 ‘Lady Nan’.

2999’s visit is courtesy of the Didcot Railway Centre.

All locomotives appear subject to availability.
