The distinctive sound of a steam locomotive as it climbs the 1 in 56 incline back to Cranmore Station and the roaring furnace firing the engine.

Our Driver Taster Experience gives you the chance to enjoy the excitement of driving and firing a steam locomotive, under the guidance of our skilled and dedicated footplate crews.

*Please note that we are currently priorotising customers who have pre-paid vouchers for our Driver Taster Experience. If you do not have a voucher we are unable to take your booking at this time. Your voucher's expiration date is the date by which you must have booked your experience and is not the date of the experience itself. We are currently sold out for 2024 and have released some 2025 dates. If you cannot see a date which works for you and your voucher please call us on 01749 880417 to discuss your options.* 

 
£295 1.5 HOUR SESSION

During your session you will:

  • Be under the guidence of our expert footplate crew who will share their knowledge and experience with you
  • Take a turn driving the steam engine only, one way over the line (approximately 2.5 miles of driving)

Each session is booked on an individual basis so you will receive the undivided attention and instruction of the footplate crew.

All participants will receive 2 free day rover tickets for family and friends, plus a commemorative certificate from the ESR on completion.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

Due to the complexity of the organisation involved in operating the Standard and Premier Footplate Experiences the following conditions apply.

Cancellations

We are unable to offer a refund if course is cancelled within 21 days of booked date. If course is cancelled prior to 21 days a refund will be given minus an administration fee of £40.00

Alterations

We are unable to accept alterations within 21 days of booked date. If an alteration to the booked date is necessary prior to 21 days an administration fee of £40.00 will be required.

Gift Vouchers 

We are unable to offer a general gift voucher for our Driver Taster Session.  Date and time needs to be pre-booked.
