Volunteering

Credit: Bob McLetchie,

Without our volunteers there would be no
East Somerset Railway!

We welcome all volunteers, so if you have a few hours free why not come to the ESR. You might learn a different skill, or can teach us something new and there are many varying ways in which you can help keep our steam heritage alive. We would love to hear from you.

From mid March to October we run steam trains each Saturday and Sunday, then June onwards we also run on Wednesdays and in August only Thursdays too. To do this we need the help of our volunteers. There many varied jobs around the railway, so whatever your professional background, skills or interest, there will be a role for you and your help will aid the continued success of the East Somerset Railway
(please note, full training will be given where necessary).

Volunteer jobs range from welcoming and helping our visitors, to working on the footplate as a Driver or Fireman, becoming a Guard, staffing the ticket office and shop, maintaining and restoring engines and stock, maintaining the track, signalling, plus our buildings and grounds.

Our volunteers work regularly on a Wednesday and a Saturday but other days also, depending on events and the jobs that need doing. If you would like to get an idea of what we do please pop into the railway on either a Wednesday or Saturday to have a chat with our current volunteers and Volunteer Coordinator, Richard Masters.

The time you give is down to you, we are happy for any help you can give! If you would like to be contact by our Volunteer Coordinator please leave your details with our office on 01749 880417 (Tuesday-Friday 10.30am-3.30pm, press option 3) or Email us

If you are between 14 - 18 years old and you want to help out then no problem, you can join our junior volunteer section!

*Please note, to become a volunteer you must be a member of the East Somerset Railway.

We look forward to welcoming you!
