On Sunday 25th September 1983, an unfortunate accident occured at Cranmore Depot when a locomotive struck the loading shute of the coal stage. The impact caused the entire structure to collapse, injuring two members who were subsequently detained in hospital because of their injuries. They were released after a few days and fortunately suffered no lasting injuries. The locomotive involved was LMS 3F `Jinty` 47493 which suffered only slight damage, but the coaling stage, however, was a complete write-off and had to be removed.

The incident was reviewed by the Railway Inspectorate and as a result, a new safety regime was implemented on the railway. The area which was occupied by the coal stage was subsequently cleared and reused for the Carriage Shed.
